What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are the hormones of the plant and are the substances that give the plant its' aroma.

Why are the sometimes expensive?

It takes about 250 lbs of rose petals to produce just 1 oz of Rose Otto essential oil. That's about 114 kg of Rose petals and they don't weigh very much!

When the growing season is good the prices can come down and if the yield has been poor then the prices tend to rise.

Generally speaking, you 'get what you pay for'. The dearer oils tend to be better quality and the cheaper ones are often a poorer grade. Some unscrupulous dealers even cut or dilute them with other oils and synthetic ingredients.

You will often find some of the dearer oils such as Rose, Chamomille and Neroli diluted in pure jojoba oil to make them a more affordable price. This is a very acceptable presentation and the percentage of dilution should be clearly stated on the label.

Caring for your Essential Oils

• store them in light resistant bottles such as amber or cobalt blue
• store in a cool dark place
• replace lids immediately to prevent evaporation
• replace lids to the correct bottles to prevent contamination with other oils
